For more than 7 years, it’s been known as the Big Scary Show to the prominent players in the Halloween industry. A podcast that has listeners from coast-to-coast, that’s both respected and admired.

Briefly, let me say that The Big Scary Show are sponsors, and subscribers of Halloween Living Magazine. But that’s not why I wrote this article. I wrote it as a fan. A fan that became a listener two years ago, and had the good fortune of stumbling passed their booth at the 2019 Transworld Halloween and Attractions Show in St. Louis, where I quickly learned that they are just as gracious and genuine in person as they are “on air.”

The Halloween Capital of the World is…Anoka Minnesota?

It’s been dubbed the “Halloween Capital of the World.” And why not? Halloween has been a cherished tradition here since 1920, and it’s one of the first cities that pulled the “trick” out of “treat” in an effort to bring the community together in a shared celebration of civic-mindedness. Who would’ve “thunk” that a holiday, which many consider to be “evil,” is actually one that spreads civility?

For a city that boasts only 20,000 residents, it goes ALL OUT with its Halloween celebrations. In the month of October, Anoka hosts haunted houses, scarecrow competitions, costume parties and balls. In addition, there are pet costume contests, and bonfires. The town also holds not 1. Not 2. But 3 Halloween parades: a nighttime parade, a day parade for the kids, and the Grand Parade the Saturday before Halloween. If that weren’t enough, a gigantic blinking pumpkin sits atop city hall that can been seen for miles.

Everyone in the Halloween world loves a good ghost story. But, we get it. Not everyone believes in ghosts…and that’s okay. After all, seeing is believing. These non-believers have probably never been to Louisville, Kentucky, home to the best kept secret in haunted happenings.

Louisville is best known for Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby. But, what isn’t known is that Louisville is one of the spookiest places to visit for spine-tingling, and chilling adventures.

That brings us to the infamous Phoenix Hill Tavern. Known locally as an exclusive cutting edge showcase for regional and live music located at 644 Baxter Ave. in the heart of downtown Louisville. Where up and coming musicians have come to perform each year to a throng of dedicated patrons.

It’s also a place that has chilled the spine of many guests and ghost hunters for decades with its plethora of haunted incidences. For instance, some Tavern patrons have heard voices whispering in empty rooms, footsteps walking down stairs and across floors, only to find no one there, unearthly visions in mirrors, and objects moving themselves or disappearing altogether. These occurrences have peaked the interest of ghost hunters and paranormal investigators to descend on Louisville and visit the Phoenix Hill Tavern, where many of these experiences have been filmed and documented.
